Our DIY Modern Dining Table

We left the gorgeous farmhouse table that my husband built at our last house for the new renters because it did not fit the aesthetic of the new house.  Mid century modern dining tables are gorgeous, but most are made of teak which kind of clashes with our grayish floors and espresso colored cabinets.

After spending countless hours searching for the perfect table, we finally just picked one up from Ikea. We thought when we purchased it that it matched the color of our cabinets...it didn't.  asdkfjkjlhk.   We had 2 danish exchange students arriving at our house in 2 days and we had to have a dining table (because our counter tops are still not installed...that's another story).

We had already purchased and assembled the chairs...so now we needed something that would look good with those. (And yes...from Ikea).
I wanted something modern and simple, not the farmhouse look.  I thought...how about laminate?  I couldn't find any DIY tutorials online but I thought the hubs could figure it out because he's amazing like that.
After routing and staining the edges of plywood, he cut a sheet of laminate we picked up at Home Depot.
Sanding the edges after bonding the laminate to the plywood.
He added leg braces and table legs also found at Home Depot...the whole project cost just $96.
I love how it turned out...it fits our mid century modern look perfectly!

  1. I love it! Our dining room table was my great grandfather's - it's one of those things - I don't want to throw it out because it has amazing history but at the same time doesn't necessarily fit with the decor of our kitchen - for now it works though!
