The Current Chaos

This week is going to be CRAZY.  Timelines are being pushed because we rented out our current house and the new renters are moving in this Friday.  When we rented out the place our original close date on the new house was December 26th; we didn't close until January 10th.  This means we are moving into the new house while they are still doing major renovations.  Our appliances won't be showing up until February!  With a baby, a dog, and both of us working from home...well, it should be interesting to say the least.

The guts of the new house have been purged.  Here are a few updates.
The kitchen--we completely gutted it and designed a new kitchen from scratch. (When I say "we" I mean the contractor and his crew...this was way beyond DIY).
The living room--we pulled up the carpet, removed the stone wall and gas fireplace.  We are building a free standing wall that hides the entrance to the back hallway.  We wanted to have a more modern built in gas fireplace but it wasn't it the budget...so for now the TV will go there. (Which I want to hide somehow...I don't love the idea of a TV being a focal point in the room).
The back deck might look nice in the left pic, but it was completely rotted and needs to be replaced.
This is the upstairs bathroom.  We debated working on it now verses later.  We decided to just go for it because the entire bathroom is just awkward and unfunctional; i.e., a bathtub, but no shower.  We host foreign exchange students and guests regularly and will devote the income we earn from that to cover the expense of the bathroom.

We're moving in tomorrow; it's an adventure right?

  1. Ruthy, things are coming along nicely! I can't wait to see the finished product. After the initial remodel is over, would you be willing to share a budget breakdown compared to the final cost? Also, maybe some lessons learned? My husband and I are about to embark on a similar home remodel after purchasing a 1960's home this past October in Mukilteo, WA. It would be great to hear your opinion of the whole process and how close to your original budget you ended up.

  7. Living in a reno is no fun!! I hated it just when we had our kitchen and floors done. Hang in there! Hopefully the work will stay on schedule so you can get your house back soon.
