A Semi-Commitment To Quality

If I could pick a career path all over again I would've chosen the path of a photographer.  I love, love, love beautiful photographs and I've been jonesing for a DSLR camera for forever.  I would also need to learn how to use one of those fancy machines however...and because the camera will likely not be in the budget for a good 10 years because of this house we bought, I've decided I'm going to just have to get good at taking excellent pictures with my iphone.

I was completely inspired after reading this blog post.  Obvs...the image below is taken by the blogger, Jamie of Grumbles and Grunts.  People, she is amazing.  If you're not following her on instagram, you need to be.  Her photos are unbelievable...and they make you think she lives in some enchanted forest.  AND, I still can't believe it, but she takes all of her gorgeous shots with her iphone.
After reading her post I was totally inspired.  The reason I'm only making a 'semi' commitment to pretty, quality photos with my iphone is because 1) I don't live in Narnia surrounded by sunlight and the forest 2) It's winter in the PNW which means it's too freaking cold to be outside in natural light and 3) Sometimes I capture a moment and the quality lacks, but the moment is worthy.

I currently have an iphone 4...but upgrading to the next iphone (in another year when I'm due for an upgrade) is still cheaper than a DSLR!
This was the first photo I took after I decided I was going to take 'pretty' pictures.  I was intentional about the lighting, positioning (as much as you can be with a wiggly 19 week old), and editing. If I could do it over again I'd move the furniture in the background...but hey, I'm a beginner!

Is your phone your main camera source?  What are you favorite camera apps?

  1. girl, i've been itching for a dslr too, but just not in the budget right now. my husband looks at me all weird when i rather than just standing upright, i lean, crouch, tilt myself when taking a picture with my phone. he doesn't get it!
that picture though of your baby looks great. would've never guessed it was from your phone. for real.

  2. I'm about 50/50 between my cell and my dslr. But I have the droid evo, so the camera phone doesn't compare to the iphone.

I use my dslr for "pretty pictures" but use my cell on instagram for those moments that the lighting isn't just right, but I want to capture the moment forever anyway. :)

  3. wow! her pictures are incredible! i'm always amazed at how great some people are with any type of camera.

as you know, i just got a DLSR and woah, am i out of my league. i have so much to learn but i'm willing so hopefully that helps.

i use my iphone 4 for many of my pictures but i've never been intentional about getting great pictures on it because i didn't really think i could.

but wow, that picture of Penny is beautiful. can't believe you took it with your phone.

  4. I don't have an iPhone, but my Android photos have been driving me nuts lately. I've been using it more than my DSLR, but I don't want to because the quality is so terrible. This is a great post though...maybe I can learn to take better photos with it!

  5. Look at those blue eyes! Great job with that picture. Did you know you can also get lenses for your iPhone? They take incredible pictures. At photojojo.com they have a package where you can get all three lenses for $50. I got my bother one of them for Christmas and he loves it.

  7. Great i phone pic! I do have a dslr camera but those things are big so I still end up alternating between my i phone and a regular digital camera for a lot of my pics. You always have really great pics on your blog so you are doing something right even without a fancy camera.

  9. My phone is my main photo source, I take all my pictures with my iPhone 5. Sometimes it takes incredible photos and sometimes it's like eh. I'm saving up for a DSLR but for now, the iphone does a decent job, especially with editing!

  10. GREAT photo of Parker Penny!! I pull out my DSLR when I know we're going to be in epic places (i.e. big travel days or antique shopping), but I use my iPhone most of the time. It's more convenient for posting photos to Instagram and Facebook. My biggest problem is the Otterbox. The photos look suuuuper grainy because the lens gets fuzzy / dirty but I'm so clumsy that I just can't afford to not use the Otterbox. :/

Instagram is my all-time fave camera app. However, Vintique is a super cool photo editing app too.
