Beauty Routine: Skin

I've been preoccupied with skin care since I was a tween.  I often get asked what I use on my skin so I thought I'd share.  First, I have really dry, sensitive skin, but I recommend these products regardless of skin type.  Our skin is our largest organ, so I think what we put on it matters, but it's not necessary to spend buckets of money.
  • I wash my face with Cetaphil, I usually buy the type for sensitive or dry skin. I only wash at night and also use a wash cloth.  In the morning I just splash my face with water and pat dry.
  • I moisturize with Jojoba oil--I buy mine at Trader Joe's, but you can typically find it at drug stores or natural food stores.  I've tried a variety of natural oils to moisturize my face from olive oil, Vitamin E oil, and grapeseed oil.  All of these options are good, but I find Jojoba absorbs into the skin well without leaving greasy feeling.   Plus it's super affordable compared to most moisturizers on the market.  I apply morning and night.
  • HotDot.  This stuff is amazing.  I never had acne or pimples until I hit my mid 20's.  Then all of a sudden I got adult onset cystic acne.  It was horrible.  A friend recommended an aesthetician who used a line of products called Fanie--a holistic, botanical skin care line.  I used their products exclusively for years until I found comparable, more affordable options.  But I've never found anything better for zits.  It works like magic without drying my skin out, and that tiny little container lasts forever.
I love Bare Minerals makeup; it feels good on my skin, lasts all day and looks natural.  I justify spending the money on it by purchasing drug store brand eye makeup and lipstick. (And yes, those are coffee beans in a jar holding my makeup brushes--they smell delish every morning).
  • I'm a huge fan of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap.  It's fair trade, organic, and 100% biodegradable.  It's made with organic extra virgin coconut, olive, jojoba, hemp, and pure essential oils.  It's super moisturizing and safe to use even on pets...yep, I use this stuff on Gus too!
  • For lotion I use the Target brand of Eucerin Calming Creme.  Again, I have really dry skin, so not only does this stuff keep me moisturized, it helps prevent itchy flaky skin too.  I've used this on my pregnant belly every day, and I've yet to get a single stretch mark.
All opinions are my own; I was not compensated in any way--I've used these products for years and just wanted to share!

  2. Great tips! I've battled acne since elementary school and can attest to the more natural, the better. I'm about to order the Hot Dot right now and am definitely using your makeup brush holder idea!

  3. I use the coconut oil from TJ's as a moisturizer at night - love that stuff! It takes a bit to soak in, but it helps with acne and leaves my skin soft and smooth.

  6. Acne is the. WORST. I've dealt with it since middle school. It went started going away mid-college but it's suddenly reappeared in the last few months. Cetaphil worked well until I started breaking out again. Now I use Burt's Bees Acne treatment (Willow Bark is an AMAZING natural element - it can heal so many things!!) and it seems to be working pretty well. Bare Minerals was awesome when my skin was smooth but now it just doesn't do the trick. :( I'm definitely going to check out these other products though!! Thanks so much!!!

(PS: I love everything about the presentation of this post. Chalkboards are the jam.)

  7. Might I recommend Queen Helene's Mint Julep Mask. It's green and feels minty/tingly, it's one my favorite face products. If I have a pimple, or feel one coming on, I'll use a q-tip and dab this stuff on. It shrinks it/dries it out immediately. It's around $4 a tube, at Walgreens, etc.
