Well it's about that time ladies. The truth about post-wedding weight gain is here. I SO want to be content with where I'm at, but 15 pounds later...I just can't.
I have to say that I totally lucked out before my wedding. I had a health issue that caused me to lose weight. I didn't try, I didn't exercise much, I ate whatever I wanted, and I lost weight. It was awesome.
Not the case any longer...as my clothes got tighter I got more and more uncomfortable so I started hitting the gym 5 times a week, I've been watching my diet; I've been at it for just under a month...but the dang scale wont budge.
I Googled how common it is for newlyweds to gain weight their first year of marriage...apparently it's pretty common...but it still sucks. You can read an article here. But there are tons of other articles if you Google it too.
Did you gain weight the first year of marriage? Are any of you losing weight? Share your tips please!

I totally gained 8lbs after the wedding (August) through the holiday season. AND THEN I got pregnant at 8lbs heavier than I wanted to be which totally sucked b/c you aren't supposed to diet. Worse scenario ever.
ReplyDeleteBut, even 16 weeks pregnant, I've only gained 1lb and I think it's because I'm just moving that extra weight into baby weight.
But long story short, I think it's way common. And I bet you still look absolutely stunning. :)
I actually maintained after. Then, on our honeymoon 3 mo later I pigged out and gained which sent me into diet mode and now I'm less then I was on our wedding day. You are taking action. With 5 days a week exercise the scale WILL budge as long as you are doing well with your diet too. Stick with it!! : )
ReplyDeleteoh i TOTALLY gained weight. i mean, i'm not a chub chub now or anything but my figure was svelte-ish at the wedding. it's soft around the edges now.
ReplyDeleteI gained a lot of weight, partly my fault (cooking big dinners, not getting as much excercise) and partly THE PILL. I was on birth control for 4 years and when I got off I lost 20 pounds.
ReplyDeleteI gained but mostly medical and I stopped smoking- I think total now about 10lbs- it has been 2.5 years....I am still trying to lose it but it won't come off!!
ReplyDeleteMe! I gained about 6-8 lbs., but at my wedding, I was the skinniest I had been since freshman year of high school, so now I am closer to what I usually was.
ReplyDelete5x a week is quite a work-out, good for you! If you keep it up, I'm sure you'll see results, especially if you are dieting too. I need some of your motivation!
I got married last July and gained 10-15 pounds between July and January. At the start of the year, I decided to join weight watchers because I just couldn't stand where I was.
ReplyDeletei'm very much in the same boat as you. in the first year we've been married i gained ten pounds- every so slowly. now i've been working out at least 3 days, if not more,a week, and not eating more than 1800 calories a day since thanksgiving and i've only managed to lose 5 pounds. its frustrating. but i do think some of the stagnancy is usually do to toning up..
ReplyDeletekeep up the great work though, and i'm right there with you!
Hey Ruth,
ReplyDeleteI totally gained weight right after my wedding. I have always been very weird about my weight and in Decemmber I remember looking at a picture of me and couldn't believe how much weight I had put on. In the beginning of February I started a soup diet.. every Sunday my husband and I make a huge batch of a different soup each week (mostly chicken) then each night when we get back from work we just add something new to it; noodles or rice, more chicken, different veggies.
I have been eating oatmeal in the mornings, soup at lunch with either a string cheese or cheese and crackers and then soup at night with sometimes a salad.
I have to tell you.. the weight has been falling off pretty quickly. I lost 14lbs within 2 months!! I didn't even start going to the gym until the 1st of April and now I can see toning up in my body. Give the soup diet a try.. it's not as hard as you think it is.. and most people I know only do the soup at night and just eat healthy breakfast and lunches.. but I love soup so I just went at it for lunch and dinner.
If you need a good recipe for home made chicken noodle soup.. the one we make is so good! :)
Sounds like things are good with you guys.. hope things go well with your home purchasing!

Yep. Craig and I have been married for 4 months now and just last week started a whole new eating and exercising routine. We gave ourselves some time to relax and do (eat) whatever after the wedding, but now it's time to move on. I'm going to post about this soon, I think.
ReplyDeleteI was stressed so definitely was thin around wedding time. We've moved around a lot now so both gained a little weight but are also working out together now too. We'll see!

I'm not married, but I have definitely gained weight in the year and a half that I have been with my boyfriend. I call it "happy weight," but you're right, it doesn't end up making us too happy in the end!
ReplyDeleteI work with a trainer at my gym, and she said that the number you should look at LAST is your weight. Instead, pay attention to your measurements and your BMI--you can probably get someone at your gym to help you out with that. If you are doing exercise to make you stronger, you could be losing fat but gaining muscle, which would keep the scale pretty still...unfortunately! Good luck, and remember to count your blessings: a wonderful marriage to a great man who loves you just the way you are!
I haven't actually gained any weight after the wedding but I didn't exercise to lose weight for the wedding either. I gained a whole lot of muscle after our honeymoon though but funnily enough, it didn't affect my weight. I can see my muscle diminishing everyday so I've started exercising now to try maintain that.
ReplyDeleteTips? I stay away from crisps and cookies. They were the reason why I ballooned back in uni. Hehe...
I gained weight. Lots of it :( Now I'm trying to lose it. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteoh boy! i don't even want to talk about the weight gain after marriage. it is crazy!
ReplyDeleteright now, i am slowly {and when i say slowly, i mean slowly} losing the weight. i have been exercising about 4 days a week and i have been trying really hard not to eat too much junkfood ... i give myself one day on the weekend to splurge but then that's it.
good luck with the weight loss! i know no matter how Sean tells me i look great, if I don't feel great it doesn't matter ... i am just letting the arrival of Summer be my motivation!
I have been wondering about the Pill too.... I don't think my eating habits have changed too much, but my jeans are snug now, when they used not to be. :(
ReplyDeleteWe both gained weight after the wedding. I got on weight watchers and he got on the bike. Last summer I was on sabbatical and we both gained it back. Now i'm preggo and cannot wait to be able to lose it. I'm hoping weight watchers will work for me again this summer.
